Even a win against Tottenham might not be enough to secure Chelsea's spot in the Europa League, as the team's chances depend on the results of other teams in the league.
When asked about the implications of Chelsea failing to qualify for Europe, McFarlane said, "You're asking an interim coach about the club's future, and I'm not privy to that information. My job is to prepare the team for games and training, which I'll be doing on Tuesday for our match against Tottenham, a massive game for the club."
Despite reports of dressing room unrest, McFarlane believes his players are committed to the team's cause. He praised the team's talent and determination, stating, "It's a really talented group. Lots of quality in that group. The fight and heart have been questioned at times, but the last two performances, I don't think you can question that. I think they gave everything to try and win the trophy for the club."
Chelsea has lost four FA Cup finals in a row since their last win in 2018, and this season has been marked by fan protests against the team's owners before matches. McFarlane is in his second stint as interim manager, following Enzo Maresca's departure and Liam Rosenior's short tenure.
McFarlane's tactics have caused problems for City's coach, Pep Guardiola, but ultimately, Chelsea was unable to break through and win the match.
McFarlane reflected on the game, saying, "It was an evenly matched game, both teams had moments of control and momentum. We went toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the world. We didn't have the momentum or quality to take the lead. We know what our team is capable of, but we haven't shown it enough this season."
